Swollen or bloody gums are not nice to look at. But this is what you get when you're faced with gum disease. New Market dentist Fotolia_7500725_XS.jpg

Gingivitis and periodontitis are two widespread kinds of this disease that can eat away at your teeth. These diseases are bacterial infections that affect the bone and tissues that hold your teeth in place. Due to these diseases, you may find that you have a reddening or bleeding of the gums or possibly an affect on the bone in your jaw.

If you don't seek treatment for gingivitis, you'll probably end pu with periodontitis. In due course, the base of your gums becomes full of multiplying plaque. Toxins in the plaque ultimately start to irritate the gums and in trying to get rid of the foreign invader, the body does further damage to the gums. And when that occurs, the delicate tissues in your mouth get demolished. Gums separate from the teeth forming spaces between the teeth and gums that get full of all types of bacteria.

To take care of the issue, the New Market gum disease dentist will make the surfaces of your roots shine and scoop out all of the plaque from empty spaces and ensure that your tooth roots don't have anymore bacteria hanging around.

But beware, if your dentist gets rid of your gum disease and you don't want it to come back again, there are certain things you need to do. Flossing after every meal is a good start. Starting with a waxed dental floss is best. You can take it right with you wherever you go so that it is available if you go to a restaurant for dinner.

Follow up the flossing with a good tooth brushing. You should always brush for about two minutes, hitting your gums as well as your teeth. Brush back and forth with a firm pressure and make sure your gums get part of the brushing. This is one of the bast ways to loosen bacteria.

Then, get a waterpik and try that out. Try using one that has a cannula — it's kind of like a water nozzle that gets fluid into the little cracks and crevices in your mouth. That fluid should be a mixture of warm water, salt and hydrogen peroxide.

It's true that gum disease is a major problem, but with the right help, it is manageable. But how successful that will be will depend on having a good bond with your New Market dentist.
